Farnborough International Airshow 2026: A Record-Breaking Pivot Toward Defence and Emerging Tech

ASIM, Jun 25

Preparations for the 78th Farnborough International Airshow (FIA2026) are reaching their final stages, with organizers confirming that this year’s event will be the largest in its history. Reflecting unprecedented industry demand, the exhibition space has sold out twice over, prompting the addition of a sixth hall to accommodate well over 100,000 expected visitors between July 20 and 24.

The most significant strategic takeaway from this year’s iteration is a profound structural shift in exhibitor composition. Driven by heightened global geopolitical tensions, the traditional 60/40 split favoring commercial aviation over defence has shifted to a near 50/50 balance. Global defence firms are heavily prioritizing the show as a critical arena for procurement and security partnerships. In line with current UK Government restrictions, participation from Russian and Iranian firms remains banned.

Beyond defence, FIA2026 is welcoming a massive wave of innovation, with 22% of participants exhibiting for the first time. These new players are heavily focused on artificial intelligence, supply chain logistics, and advanced air mobility—including highly anticipated flight demonstrations from electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) developers. With 64% of exhibitors originating from outside the UK and an unprecedented early commitment from major UK Government bodies, FIA2026 is positioning itself as the definitive global benchmark for the future of aerospace, national defense, and industrial resilience.
