Israel signs $5.2 billion deal for 25 new F-15 fighter jets

ASIM, nov 07

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has announced a $5.2 billion deal to acquire 25 additional F-15 fighter jets from Boeing, with deliveries set to begin in 2031. The acquisition comes amid ongoing regional conflicts, particularly with Iran-backed groups in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen. Israel has used its existing fleet of F-15s for long-range strikes, such as a notable mission in Yemen in July. This deal is part of Israel’s broader effort to strengthen its air capabilities in light of regional instability, including the recent escalation with Hamas.

The deal was finalized following negotiations between Israeli defense officials and Boeing, with the involvement of the Israeli Air Force. Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, signed an earlier procurement authorization during a visit to the U.S. last month. The Israeli Ministry of Defense emphasized that this acquisition is part of a broader package of U.S. military aid, which has been approved by both the U.S. Administration and Congress earlier in 2024.

Israel has long relied on the F-15, with the aircraft first entering service in the 1970s. Over the years, Israel has continuously upgraded its fleet, and in recent years, it has been considering newer models, such as the F-15EX variant. In addition to the F-15 purchase, Israel also signed an agreement in 2024 to acquire a third squadron of F-35 jets, further enhancing its air defense capabilities. Should Israel exercise an option to purchase additional F-15s, the total value of the deal could reach $18 billion.
