Spirit AeroSystems shareholders have approved Boeing’s acquisition of the Wichita-based aerostructures manufacturer, clearing the way for the deal to close by mid-2025.
The agreement, originally announced in June 2024, is a strategic move by Boeing to address ongoing quality and safety concerns.
The acquisition focuses on Spirit’s Boeing-related operations, while Airbus has separately expressed interest in acquiring Spirit’s Airbus-related business. The deal aims to streamline Boeing’s supply chain and improve production oversight.
Boeing’s acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems, approved by Spirit shareholders, is a strategic move to stabilize Boeing’s supply chain, improve production efficiency, and address persistent quality issues. Boeing views this acquisition as crucial for ensuring long-term manufacturing reliability and regulatory compliance. The shareholder approval is a major step forward, signaling confidence in the merger and Spirit’s commitment to safety and quality.
However, the acquisition still faces regulatory hurdles. Due to Spirit’s role as a supplier to both Boeing and Airbus, the deal requires a careful division of assets to avoid conflicts. Boeing will take over Spirit’s Boeing-related operations, while Airbus plans to acquire Spirit’s Airbus-related business. This separation is essential for Airbus to maintain control over its own supply chain. The acquisition is expected to benefit Boeing by streamlining production, particularly for the 737 program, and enhancing quality control, potentially leading to improved safety standards and manufacturing precision.
