ASIM, dec 18

Cineca and Leonardo have formed a partnership aimed at enhancing Italy’s technological development through a structured digital services supply chain for the national industrial system. This collaboration, which began in 2020 under a framework agreement, focuses on leveraging research and technological innovation to improve the competitiveness of Italy’s production and industrial sectors. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by key executives from both organizations, highlighting their commitment to using high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures to elevate the country’s industrial capabilities.

Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo, emphasized that the partnership seeks to enhance Italy’s computing and storage capacity, serving as critical indicators of national development alongside GDP. Alessandra Poggiani, General Director of Cineca, pointed out that the collaboration will facilitate technology transfer and create a model that starts with research and culminates in practical applications, ultimately supporting national economic growth and innovation. Their joint efforts will particularly focus on developing generative AI technologies, which utilize machine learning and deep learning to generate new content from vast datasets.

The MoU outlines a collaborative framework where Cineca will provide computational resources to advance integrated platforms for research and education, while Leonardo will apply its expertise and supercomputing infrastructure to transform these innovations into industrial services. This partnership is critical for the implementation of generative AI in the industrial sector, which has immense economic potential. With a current market value of €760 million for AI in Italy, the collaboration aims to accelerate digital transformation among SMEs, enhancing their competitiveness and contributing significantly to Italy’s GDP growth.
