The International Air Transport Association (IATA) unveiled its latest economic forecast during the 80th Annual General Meeting (AGM), once again highlighting the industry’s razor-thin profit margins. Remarkably, Latin America and the Caribbean reported their first net profits since the pandemic, with $200M in 2023 and an anticipated $600M in 2024. North America showed even stronger performance, with airlines posting $14.8B in net profits for 2023 and expected to achieve the same amount in 2024, equating to approximately $1.90 per passenger in Latin America/Caribbean and $13.10 per passenger in North America. Overall, the industry is projected to generate $60B in operating profits and $30.5B in net profits in 2024.
