New £21 Million fund from British Airways to put 200 aspiring pilots from all backgrounds through Training

ASIM, jul 23

British Airways has committed £21 million to its Speedbird Pilot Academy, which aims to fund the training of up to 200 prospective pilots, eliminating the £100,000 cost barrier. This initiative seeks to enhance social mobility and diversity within the pilot community by collaborating with community groups to encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds. Launched last year, the Academy is already training 100 future pilots selected from over 20,000 applicants, and has expanded the 2025 program to accommodate an additional 100 trainees.

The training program, which spans two years, culminates in a qualification as a First Officer with British Airways. The announcement, made at the Farnborough International Airshow, highlighted the airline’s commitment to sustainability by showcasing a new A320neo aircraft powered by over 35% Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle expressed pride in the Academy’s role in helping aspiring pilots achieve their dreams without financial constraints. Testimonials from current cadets, such as Ryan Street and Melanie Odden, emphasize the transformative impact of the program, allowing them to pursue aviation careers that might otherwise have been financially out of reach.
