Korean Air Commits to Up to 50 Boeing Widebodies to Strengthen Future Long-Haul Fleet

Boeing and Korean Air have announced a major deal for up to 50 of Boeing’s fuel-efficient widebody aircraft. This includes an order for 20 777-9s and 20 787-10s, with options for an additional 10 of the larger 787 Dreamliner variant. Korean Air plans to use these aircraft to expand and modernize its fleet, improving its service on high-demand international routes to Europe and North America, as well as popular regional routes in Asia. The new airplanes will enhance the airline’s operational efficiency and flexibility, particularly as it prepares for its merger with Asiana Airlines.

Korean Air’s Chairman and CEO, Walter Cho, emphasized that the acquisition represents a key milestone in the airline’s fleet expansion and upgrade strategy. The 777-9 and 787-10 are expected to significantly enhance passenger comfort, reduce carbon emissions, and improve overall operational efficiency. With the 777-9 accommodating up to 426 passengers and the 787-10 up to 336 passengers, these aircraft are noted for their advanced technologies, including new composite wings and engines that improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

Boeing’s Stephanie Pope expressed appreciation for Korean Air’s selection of their latest widebody jets, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two companies. The 777-9 and 787-10 will support Korean Air’s sustainability goals and growth ambitions. Korean Air, recently ranked the #2 airline in the world by airlineratings.com, will also introduce new business class suites and Wi-Fi on its 787-10s.
