UCL has officially joined Space South Central, the UK’s largest regional space cluster, as an academic partner. This addition strengthens the cluster’s prestigious reputation in space research and innovation, complementing existing partners such as the University of Portsmouth, University of Southampton, and University of Surrey. Space South Central, which includes Hampshire, Surrey, and the Isle of Wight, represents a significant sector with over 170 space-related organizations and around 14,000 employees, contributing £3 billion to the industry.

UCL’s involvement will enhance connections between London’s academic and business networks and the space sector in southern England. Its global profile is expected to bolster Space South Central’s international outreach, building on the region’s annual £1.64 billion in export revenue and £65 million in foreign investment. UCL, with its Mullard Space Science Laboratory and extensive experience in satellite missions and space research, brings valuable expertise and capabilities to the cluster.

The partnership aligns with UCL’s strategic goals to advance space research and create opportunities for students, researchers, and industry professionals. Dr. Louise Butt of Space South Central and Professor Geraint Rees of UCL both expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting the potential for significant benefits and innovations resulting from this strengthened academic and industry alliance.
