Olsen Actuators and Drives has provided a custom actuation and drives package for Vertical Aerospace’s VA-1X prototype, an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This four-passenger, zero-emissions aircraft represents a new, sustainable mode of urban transport. The VA-1X’s first flight occurred in September 2022, followed by extensive testing of the concept aircraft in 2023. The latest iteration, the VX4, made its first piloted flight in July 2024, gathering extensive data to verify performance, handling, and system functionality.
The actuation systems from Olsen include high-capacity servo actuators with unique features such as precision position encoders and high-strength components. These systems were paired with ESI Motion servo drive electronics, providing dynamic performance that surpassed expectations. Olsen’s internal testing, along with external validation to meet DO160G standards, confirmed the reliability of the actuators for use in the VX4 aircraft. This collaboration allowed for agile adjustments in design to meet Vertical’s evolving requirements.
Olsen Actuators and Drives has expanded its workforce and reinvested profits from the project to support further research and development. The company is working toward full AS9100 certification by 2025 and aims to explore more opportunities in the global eVTOL market. Their collaboration with Vertical Aerospace has enhanced their advanced manufacturing capabilities in the UK and positioned them for future growth in aerospace innovation.
