The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has recommended Saab’s Gripen E over Lockheed Martin’s F-16 to replace its ageing F-16 fleet, although the final decision is pending. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the importance of evaluating the offset offers from both companies before making a final choice. He expressed interest in having Saab base its aircraft technology development in Thailand, potentially through the establishment of local facilities for assembly, production, or repair.
Saab has proposed a plan that they claim will offer significant long-term returns on investment for Thailand, including a structured approach to technology development within the country. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin is promoting its economic value through a robust offset proposal that includes the establishment of an R&D center, advanced aerospace engineering training, and local sustainment capabilities, aiming to boost Thailand’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors.
